Diabetes

Not everyone is familiar with the concept of prediabetes.  Essentially, this is a medical condition in which an individual has blood sugar levels that are considered higher then average, but not quite high enough to qualify for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.  Upon hearing that blood glucose levels are not within normal levels, many patients will want ask their physicians how serious is prediabetes?  The fact is that the condition is one that deserves monitoring and will require some lifestyle changes in order to manage the prediabetic state (read Prediabetes for Dummies).

How Do I Deal with Prediabetes?

Once you have an answer to the question of how serious is prediabetes, you probably want to know what you can do about the situation (What You Need to Know to Keep Diabetes Away).  In fact, there is a lot you can do. Your first step is to pay more attention to the amount and type of carbohydrates in your diet. Reduce the amount of all carbohydrates in your diet, but be especially careful to eliminate simple carbohydrates. Refined sugar and similar simple carbohydrates are more likely to cause blood sugar spikes than the complex carbohydrates found in whole grains. By controlling those spikes, you help to gradually lower the average level of glucose in your bloodstream.

Along with dietary changes, get some exercise. Even something as simple as brisk walk for a half-hour will help your body regulate the level of glucose in your blood. Regular exercise will also make it easier to take off a few of those extra pounds and allow your body to process carbohydrates more efficiently.  Spending a little time at the gym, biking from time to time and being more active in general may be enough to bring your blood sugar under control.

Will I Eventually Develop Type 2 Diabetes?

Not everyone who is diagnosed as prediabetic will move on to type 2 diabetes.  Depending on your general health and the steps you take to lower your blood sugar, it is possible to slow or even prevent moving on to being a full blown diabetic.  After receiving your answer to the question of how serious is prediabetes, make a commitment to change your diet, exercise regularly, and lose some weight.  These three things will do wonders for your blood sugar levels and give you an excellent chance of eventually having to take medication in order to manage your blood sugar.

Work with your doctor to come up with a reasonable diet plan that provides plenty of nutrients but not a lot of simple carbohydrates.  Keep in mind that you don’t have to avoid any type of food completely.  What it does mean is that you must learn how to control the portions and the frequency that you consume certain foods, even as you introduce more nutrient rich foods into your meals. When it comes to exercise, start out with activities that are appropriate for your fitness level and gradually move on to more intensive activities.  As your blood sugar levels move back into normal ranges, you’ll feel better and be a lot healthier
